They can lift their tail in a box trap. If you head shoot them, they short circut and spray, they can’t help it. Most times if I shot a skunk behind the shoulder through the lungs they did not spray, sometimes a little leaked out when they died but most times they didn’t spray.
When you set the trap down, do it gently, and place it with the door facing away from you. Working from behind the trap or alongside it, pull back the tarp just far enough to be able to open the door. Once you have it open, prop it open with a dowel or stick and move away to let the skunk find its way out.
Once You’ve Caught a Skunk in a Live Trap, Calmness Is Key
Understandably, a trapped skunk will be frightened, which increases the risk of spraying.
Anyone who’s driven past a deceased skunk on the road knows that skunks usually spray when they die. This sometimes happens because of fear when they try to defend themselves against a person (or pet, or vehicle) and sometimes happens reflexively during or after death.
Human urine will repel skunks. Skunks are naturally timid creatures, and by smelling human urine, they will be aware that a predator is in the area and stay away from that location. The smell of urine will dissipate anywhere from a few hours to 24 hours, so it must be frequently applied to be effective.
Anti freeze sometimes kills raccoons, skunks, squirrels and other animals.
It’s true! Coffee grounds that you were planning to dispose of anyway could very well aid you in solving your smelly skunk situation. Coffee grounds have a bitter scent that, unlike black pepper and capsaicin (or chili peppers), do not irritate the sinuses of skunks but still do deter them.
